Jl Company Announces Partnership Dedicated To Improving Health In Diverse Communities

Institute for Health Protection Addresses Growing Multicultural Healthcare Market

BOSTON, August 29, 2006 – Responding to the rapidly growing multicultural population in the United States, the JL Company, a leading provider of custom healthcare marketing solutions, announced today a partnership with the Institute for Health Protection, a newly formed organization dedicated to improving health and preventing and managing chronic disease in diverse communities. The Institute’s mission is to preserve and improve health status, prevent or delay the onset of disease or disability, and improve the management of chronic conditions in underserved communities.

According to the US Census Bureau, minority groups currently comprise one-third of the population in the United States. Through a variety of initiatives, the Institute will address the broad range of health issues faced by this rapidly growing and underserved healthcare market. The focus of these initiatives will range from primary prevention, including immunizations and behavioral/lifestyle modification, to secondary and tertiary prevention, such as appropriate medications for diabetes or hypertension.

Leading the Institute is its Executive Director, Clyde H. Evans, PhD, formerly Vice President, Association of Academic Health Centers (AAHC). As director of the American Network of Health Promoting Universities at AAHC, Dr. Evans gained extensive experience creating and executing community-based health education programs. An Advisory Board of nationally recognized health professionals will provide strategic direction and counsel on Institute initiatives.

“In the changing healthcare market, it is more important than ever to address the needs of the increasingly diverse population throughout the country,” said Dr. Evans. “The Institute for Health Protection is a powerful mechanism for bringing together resources from multiple sectors--academic, clinical, community, corporate, and nonprofit--and focusing them to improve the health of ordinary people right in their own communities.”

The Institute’s goal is to close the gap between evidence-based approaches that have been shown to be effective in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, and what is known by patients and practiced by health professionals in everyday life. Building on programs first developed in 2001 under Advances in Care, the Institute will use a community-based partnership model that engages and coordinates with local stakeholders and builds on existing community infrastructure in order to increase outreach to community members and to ensure sustainability over time.
